The structure of the pom is defined by two elements – the HANDLE and STRANDS.

Handles

We currently carry 2 kinds of pom handles:

  1. Baton
  2. Show

Pom Handles - Baton

Baton Handle

Baton handle poms is one of the more popular handle choices. Baton handle, unlike the one shown in the picture on the left, is not visible as it is hidden by the strands. One of the greatest advantages of baton handle poms is that one can grab the pom from any angle and still have a firm grip on the pom.

Baton handles are perfect for half-and-half style poms.

Pom Handles - Show

Show Handle

Show handle poms is suitable for choreography which requires use of poms throughout the routine as its elastic band, which fits around the wrist, provides additional support. It is not advisable for routines which requires use of poms at specific periods in the routine as the short handle takes some time to put in and take out of the wrist and does not provide optimal grip without the use of the elastic band.

Show handle poms are commonly used by youth teams where the young cheerleaders do not have strong fingers for prolonged periods of gripping.

The handle, unlike baton, are visible from certain angles. Show handle poms are great for target and bullseye style.

Strands

Pom Strands - Anatomy

Strands make up the bulk and body of the pom. The length of the strands determine the size of the pom while the width affects the shape and movement.

The SIZE of the pom is derived from the length of the pom strands, from where it’s attached to the handle. We currently offer 4 standard sizes – 4″, 6″, 8″ and 10″. Small poms are great for young cheerleaders or choreography which requires fast movements. Big poms are suitable for cheerleaders who cheer frequently for games as their size allow greater visibility from the stands. See the illustration below on how the size of the pom is derived from strands attached to different handles.

Pom Strands - Size Measurement

SHAPE OR MOVEMENT – It’s all up to your personal preference. If you want more movement, go for smaller sized poms (e.g. 4″ or 6″) with 0.6cm strands. Keep in mind that the pom will adopt a stringy and mop-like appearance if you go with bigger sizes for the 0.6cm strands, due to their inability to hold a shape with the extra length. However, if you prefer a ball shape pom, go with the wider 2cm strands. Remember that the smaller the pom, the stiffer it is. A 4″ size pom with 2cm strand holds its shape fabulously but does not have create much movement when you shake the pom.

TIP – If you are still undecided on which pom to order, perhaps this information will help you: 6″ baton pom with 2cm strands are our most demanded poms. *wink*
